If this is your first time visiting Bulgaria and Sofia(in particular), the temple Sveta Sofia is a must see place. The church is emblematic for Bulgaria. The temple Sveta Sofia has an amazing architecture and it has a very special place for the Bulgarian capital history - Sofia. The today's basilica is built on old churches dating back to 4 AD. During the Medieval ages the church was used mainly as public city church, but during the Turkish reign of the region, in the 16th century the church was turned in mosque.
The building was affected by the earthquakes in 1818 and 1858. In 1911 there was a start of archaeological excavations and in 1935 the church was fully restored.
Closed by the temple Sveta Sofia, you can also see St. Alexander Nevsky cathedral. Sofia downtown part is perfect for walking around and there's a lot to see. We highly recommend you to visit the temple Sveta Sofia and the surrounding area!
